Easily the most pleasant post i have done in a while - here is a collection of smooth grooves that shouldn't get your pulse racing, but should be enjoyed in the small morning hours, lock the doors, close the curtains, lie back, close your eyes and let the soothing music envelop you...

You know the feeling when you put your hand in your pocket and feel a note (and then you go through the inner prayer - please be £20, please please please) - i get the same feeling when i stumble across amazing old songs, this is one of those songs - with its rolling lounge beat, carefully placed piano melody and shimmering episodes of plucked guitar, 'The Real Deal' is mesmerizing. However, its the inclusion of stunning chanted vocals which really makes this track shine, transporting you across continents, and giving you a taste of Africa. The electronica duo Goldfish (the 'Fishies' to their fans) hail from SA and are just ludicrously talented, buy their latest album here

I love getting the excuse to post Kalkbrenner, so here we go, a really laid back remix released in 2009, the original 'Closed Eyes' - Chordian was a classic piece of Detroit Techno, Kalkbrenner has retained the soulful vibe of the original, but injected his own juice into the mix - with the integration of a really sharp synth and a fattened bassline, you would think this pumped up version would have you hitting the dancefloor, however the repetitive beat and muted piano makes it delightfully soporific - earning it a spot here

Hypnotic, dreamy, heavenly - all of the above, the drumbeat is so light its almost insubstantial and the strummed backing guitar is strangely uplifting amidst the melancholic instrumentals (a little ivory tinkling is also thrown in for good measure at the end) - all nicely wrapped up with Erlend Øye's soft, sombre vocals - a very pleasant track that i am sure is well known to most of you!

Ok, i don't really like Indie music, however i do like Au Revoir Simone and i really like Max Cooper (as i am sure you will have guessed from previous posts) - so i jumped on the release back in 2009, when it was posted for free in 192kbps here. However i have been in the process of updating my entire music collection into 320, so i was recently reacquainted with this fantastical remix - the familiar Cooper clicks and static hiss prickle throughout, a muted kick breaks through the cold whispering synth. Out of the depths slowly climb the tinkling piano chimes and the dampened vocals of the original... which eventually break into warm liquid sub bass, its awesome. Techno Techno

Sweet variety collection of Techno to get hot and bothered about... these tracks have been keeping me warm as the long cold Chile nights roll in....

Slightly mixed thoughts on including this one in the post - some classify this as Techno, others as Electro House - however because it was included on an album called 'The Definitive Techno Compilation' - i am pretty sure its Techno. Its a fantastic remix, the duo have spruced up the originals punchy bass and tweaked the echoing space-synth to roll over, imparting a much groovier feel - this remix inspired me to buy most of Olivier Giacomottos' productions

Marek receives honorary title of hypnotic funk daddy with this dreamy euphoric groove. Driving crystal strings, a wavering bass line and of course the crooning vocals delivered by Fabian Reichelt who manages to impart solemn soul into the fresh techno. I love the gentle break before the drop.
Its a delicious production from a producer i had great hopes for in 2009 (see my post here,) he has certainly stepped up to the mark. I can only hope 2010 brings more Hemmann! His Left/Right EP will be available to download on the 26th April here

If you love deep & dubby Techno then check this out - 'Mekong Delta' was originally released in 2007 this massive production is a mix of dry drums, pulsing organ and frequent breaks. Its an essential piece of "big" techno, and one of my favorite rave anthems...was lucky enough to see this at Melt 2008 where it just tore the dance floor to shreds

DJ Madskillz is one of the most respected DJs in the Netherlands he boasts a discography over 90 productions, not to mention a huge list of remixes, i enjoy his work. With his 2010 remix 'Mr Bean Does an E' he audiolizes the fantastic title by bringing a huge amount of energy into this remix, jumping it up with a pumping beat…. this is a fantastic tech house track that bears little resemblance to the original... best thing to come from the commercial clubbing giant Ministry of Sound since, well...ever!

I cannot get over how many amazing D&B tunes have been released in 2010, no question D&B is my preferred genre of the moment, so... i can't help but give this post a bit of preferential treatment by posting 7 tracks instead of the usual 5 - but all the tracks are stormers, so i apologize for nothing!

I know very little about the Russian artists 'Liquilade' aside from the fact that the cover art of their website is a little like a Gap Advert - check it here. Nevertheless (moving on from poor photo choice,) these guys have a pleasant sound going on - particularly in the case of 'Colorite.' Some nice smooth (fairly generic but very listenable) liquid to spread on the dance-floor

I have chosen to showcase a track by the artist 'Gen' taken from an unreleased compilation album called 'Time Travel Volume 2' - i really, really recommend you go and buy this one - cause its just awesome. 'Reactor' is stunning Atmospheric Jungle - can't get enough of the nasal vocals, its firmly on repeat in my head and available exclusively here

For such an ominously entitled track, its surprisingly light, although definitely more grinding than your standard liquid - its got a nice Tech-Step buzzing vibe, and a vocal instructing us to 'get our rage on'... If the song says so, you must comply! Its out on promo 12" here

I guess this is Neuro Funk - its certainly got a very Electro feel to it, really spacey music with a rapid staccato beat... i really like the anticipation build with this production, its a full 5 minute wait before a break at the crescendo finally leads into the tasty heavy-hitting drop

More Atmospheric D&B, with another great vocal sample (what can i say, i'm a sucker for mellow beats) - and they don't get much more mellow than this. Pulsing synths, crooning vocals and the odd clap, all undercut by a very deep muted kick - beautiful

Nice bit of heavy heavy D&B, sort of diet-hard-style, this is an absolute smasher, very much like heyday 'Hold Your Colour' - Pendulum. Phetsta has stripped back the speed of the original, maintained the awesome dark spoken sample, and jumped up the throbbing bass and buzzsaw synth - the vinyl will be released on the 30/04

I just can't get enough of these guys at the moment. This is the best XX remix I've heard and thats hard to beat seeing as they've been remixed by just about every upcoming Dubstep act in the scene. It's not known whether this is getting a full release yet, but for now have a listen to the full soundcloud version. By the way if you didn't know already Dark Sky is The Booogaloos Crew's side project.

I'm sorry I haven't done a post for a while so I thought I'd reward your patience with a preview of SBTRKT's fairly new track Rundown. It's been released by Young Turks, the same label that brought you the XX (as you can guess from the success of their album, they've had a lot of press coverage lately) and is the first Dubstep/Garage release on that label. SBTRKT (The masked man) is predominantly a garage producer but to be honest it's quite hard to pin point his style. I think you'll like this track, it's not necessarily heavy Dubstep but there's something about it which makes you want to move about......if you know what I mean. In response to some requests i have put this post together. I would be lying if i said i was knowledgeable about the genre - but it has been of paramount importance to the evolution of electronic music, and therefore it is essential that i try to dabble in Dub.

So here we go - i am sure there will be much amusement at this paltry selection of Dubbery - please give me some feedback, i would be interested to hear what people think about this post!

Might as well start at the roots with 'The Revolutionaries' - Drum and bass reggae legends, Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare put together this little ditty. Its spaced out music, with repetitive instramental grooves, stomping cymbal hits and reverberating drums - skin up and lay back!

'Gentleman’s Dub Club,' were formed in 2006 and are probably the best band to come out of Leeds - I first saw them at the 'Rhythm Factory' - and was absolutely blown away by their energy, they had the whole place bouncing - 'Gentleman's Sleng' is taken from their sick debut release 'Members Only' and is their unique take on the 'Sleng Teng' riddim... nice party vibes with this one

Big shout out to my overlord brother for showing me this (and also for his constant stream of amazing photos, without which the site would look very boring) - 'Mos Dub' is a great project from DJ Max Tannone - he takes the vocals of Mos Def and works them into Dub Reggae music, ... in the case of 'History Town' its an awesome mash-up of '007 Shanty Town' - Desmond Dekker and 'History.' Taken from 'Dub Terror' (the labels debut album) is this beautiful vocal number - 'Shinobi'- it stays true to dub roots but includes some refreshing originality by fusing the standard reggae riddims with subtle futuristic instrumentals and Middle Eastern elements.

This track is from Scotlands' 'Mungo's Hi-Fi' aka Tom Tattersall. His sound has gathered support from a wide range of legends - the late great John Peel, Mr Scruff, Mary-Anne Hobbs, Rob Da Bank and David Rodigan...and deservedly so, 'Step It Out' is quite a recent track - released in 2009 via his label 'Scotch Bonnet' - smatterings of Rankin Joes' smooth vocals give the relaxed vibe a little zest to get the skank going... enjoy!

Roman Brisker and Igor Magitman produce some of the best music coming out of the (Psy-Trance dominated) Israeli electronic music scene. 'Whispering' is one of the best tracks from 'Just Another Day,' their debut full-length album released in 2008 - its a beautifully textured piece of Progressive that gently wafts along before reaching a powerful climax of steady beats and buzzing electro-synths...get it here

Felix da Housecat has taken 'Sinnerman', looped the opening piano riff, dropped in a funky beat, thus effortlessly transforming the original into a tight Funky House track, without getting in the way of Nina Simones timeless voice. The poll was very close - but Dubstep triumphed over House in the last couple of hours with 29% of the vote. This was particularly annoying for me as i spent most of last night preparing a sweet House post - but whatever... you guys wants Dubstep, so you get Dubstep!

Max Cooper has taken 'I' from the Harmonisch Serie, retained the minimal feel of the original (the subtle hiss noises, the odd diminutive click on the offbeat and the whispering synths,) and boosted the bass until the track throbs, creating an experimental foray into Dubstep which doesn't disappoint...you can get it here

From 19 year old producer Lung comes the track 'Afterlife.' The sub is huge - my earphones can't handle the bass, ghostly vocals lend the track an eerie undertone, but despite this sombre undercurrent the fantastic 'breaky' beats means its just full of energy - hard to believe the quality of this debut release!

Oh my...this is a fun track - it had me moving like Koop and feeling insanely happy (check above)

The 2010 edit is a mad Electro-House version of the original 'Weapon of Choice' - Fatboy Slim (check the video to see Christopher Walken tearing up a hotel) - it is a real feel good tune, big bass, heavy synth and some nifty scratch work from Lazy Rich - expect to hear this one get a lot of radio play!

Released in 2008, 'A Thousand Nights' has long been one of my favorite Techno tracks - it's astonishingly repetitive but this only enhances the subtle nuances and serves to bring the track to an extremely satisfactory climax - Extrawelt has performed a superb job on the rework transforming the original into a minimal masterpiece...get it here

Taken off Max Coopers latest album is the tile track 'Chaostisch Serie' - it begins with an Aphex Twin style of freaky exhaled human noises, these slowly whirl into the mix as the track floats into familiar territory. The whump whump synth so recognisable from Harmonisch & Stochastisch Serie floats in, complementing the dark, fast beat - before receiving the 'chaos' treatment as its swirled and mutated whilst it builds into the breakdown .... the serie trilogy is a must for any Techno fan!

If the words 'Kalkbrenner remixes Moby' don't get you excited - then you are probably on the wrong website. Yesterday i received a great little album through the post - 'Wait For Me' - Moby - The Remixes. It contains some great reworks by - Laidback Luke, Yousef, Zodiac Cartel and of course Paul Kalkbrenner

No question - Kalkbrenners' remix (available only here) is the best, however with its the heavy hand claps and thumping off-beat, i just can't help but feel its a slight ripoff from his earlier techno piece, the fierce jaw-dropping 'Gebrünn Gebrünn'. But... don't get me wrong, its still a great piece of music from a superb artist, i just want to know what you think!

I think by this point you will all be aware of my continuing love affair with Phaeleh. Estelle, the track is D&B - however the minimal structure and the heavy atmosphere it generates means its too good to miss - in my humble opinion this is considerably better than the vocal version, but you can decide for yourself here

You will all know the original, i personally thought it was untouchable on the remix front. However in 2006 a White Label 12" was released by an Unknown Artist featuring this gem - God knows how you are going to get hold of it - i can only suggest you buy the vinyl! However a little birdy told me the unknown remixer is in fact Kabuki...so happy hunting :)

This track is just 1 of a 100 reasons why i am a big fan of the Sonar Kollectiv label - i brought the original single in 2006 - but promptly lost it in my music collection. On the 5th March 'My Vision (Dixon Edit)' was re-released on the Elektrish Compilation and i was re-united with my old friend :) For a track with such a heavy tribal kick - it's remarkably calming!

I have noticed that generally my mates music tastes are transitioning away from 'boring' Dubstep and into Techno...

There is no question...masses of Dubstep is terrible. The genre has become overrun by hyped-up fans and by hyped-up producers who are copying and repeating the already-set cliche's. It's disappointing that the majority of these fans can't recognize this because they are dosed up to the eyeballs with party drugs.

Particularly irritating are the talented producers who conform to the demands of the ignorant masses - which means yours truly has to wade through mountains of commercialized (sorry to use that word) awful 'Dubstep.'

However, having heard some of the awesome 2010 releases, it is clear to me the genre still has so much love to give. Hopefully with my assistance, the part of you that enjoyed grubbing about in the dirt when you were small, will slowly grow - and the urge to get filthy will drive you back to my side :)

Rant over, now to satisfy a request for some Techno/Tech-House Bangers....

Federleichts' Original was great...however i find this version a significant improvement, Kollektiv & Turmstrasse have stripped much of the original vocals, their buildup beat is very tribal and subtly enhances the sweeping strings overlay and its a real tease up to the breaking point... a full 4 minutes of excellent anticipation.

Never heard of Glanta until i pickled up his Pan Adam EP...wasn't disappointed, it's a great release... i didn't think much on my first listen, so i put it to one side... however had another listen and decided that it is in fact epic... it would be a monotonous androgynous beat if it wasn't broken up by segments of high-pitched synth and shiny bleeps that, in my opinion, turn 'Pan Adam' into into a slightly spiritual experience!

'Pantograph Bouncing' Such a sick track, rolling percussion and distorted synths, it toys with you - almost every 30 seconds the steady rhythm of the track is interrupted by a brief whine that almost, nearly does...not lead to the main breakdown...its a glorious compilation of tinkling synths, chyme beats and heavy 'bouncing' bass... this is my choice techno track of 2009!

I blogged 'Sick Music' when it came out in June of last year. Along with 'Acts of Mad Men' it was far and away the best D&B compilation album produced in 2009 (perhaps a contender for best of the decade...)

When the news was announced that Hospital Records have been compiling a 'Sick Music 2' i had minor palpitations - so about 2 weeks ago, i nearly died when i opened up my email and found the 'Sick Music 2 Sampler 1' sitting in my inbox.

I would be fascinated to know the thought process that went behind deciding on the two tracks for the sampler - whoever chose is a genius, as i would now quite happily take a vow of celibacy if it meant i could get this album early!

Austrian duo Camo & Krooked appear on the A-Side with their Hospital Records debut. 'Turn Up' is liquid simplicity - refined synths slowly escalate, the underlying intricate beats twist and turn whilst the vibrating soul vocals of Pat Fulgoni crescendo into a minimalist breakdown... beautiful!

The King is dead...long live the King. At the end of 2009 i flagged Netsky as one to watch - it seems i was right, thus far he has been a production powerhouse - he seems to bring out a superb track every other day...and one of these tracks is 'Memory Lane'

It appears on the samplers flipside, a perfect foil to 'Turn Up' – clean, hard hitting and very euphoric, this is going to fill dance floors everywhere... i don't really have the descriptive capabilities to do this track justice, so i am just going to let you listen...enjoy!

You will have heard 'Spanish Sahara' - Foals, its been blogged just about everywhere, justifiably so...as it's certainly one of their best songs. With its haunting vocals and simple beat structure it was a sure-thing for quick remixes.

Mount Kimbie took up the torch first and brought the already atmospheric track straight into the stratosphere with their unique bleeps and beats - and now 1UP's resident favourite 'Graphics' has brought us his deep space version - he's cut up the vocals and worked up a simple Burial style 2 step beat - a really beautiful take on an already superb track

Probably my best clubbing experience was when i was enjoying a standard night at the Egg and whoever was behind the decks suddenly switched up the tempo and broke the set down into some Electro-swing - it was awesome, all the seasoned pilled-up ravers paired up and started tearing up the Charleston.

I have now built up a fairly large collection of Nu:Jazz, Broken-beat & Electro Swing, and here are a few favourites (old&new) -

Remember Me was released in 1997 on the first of the now well established compilation album series 'Mushroom Jazz' - it was a bit of a one hit wonder for the Scottish DJ Blue Boy, its a funky and full of soul, a dance classic that i am sure you will have heard before (digitally available here )

I can't stress how excited I am for the release of this tune (if it's ever released, although they would be mad not to!) and for any future releases from Dark Sky. I stumbled across their remix of the XX's 'Crystallised' (which is just as incredible) and knew I had to listen to their other productions. They have another release planned through a label which is really starting to get noticed - Black Acre Records who have previously released tracks from Raffertie and Pariah.

'Londinium' - Archive is in my humble opinion possibly the greatest trip hop album ever pressed! Released in 1996 and available here. It is a triumph, i am just sorry i didn't share it with you sooner - the track i have chosen is called 'Beautiful World' - the opening is very Vangelis-esque, it wouldn't feel wrong to hear this playing in 'Blade Runner,' ...that is until the smooth Hip-Hop vocals kick in, i love the subtle organ backing the vocals...an awesome track from probably one of my favourite albums of all time

Taken from the Colour Series - Pink 07 Sampler (released on Freerange Records) is 'Wanna Love You' - the artists Vincenzo & Elmar Schubert have taken a fantastic disco sample and deconstructed it into a few pulsing chords - the addition of a solid house beat gives it a really catchy quality - but its really smooth listening with a very pleasant breakdown...definitely worth the purchase!

You will all know Caribou from the track 'Odessa' that was floating around earlier this year, this new track is taken from their upcoming album 'Swim' (Release date: April 20th) - it's twangy indie electro that evolves constantly - i shouldn't like it...but i really do - this is the 20th time i have listened to it in 3 days...be sure to buy the album, already 5 of its 9 tracks are in my most played!

Once again i find myself congratulating Hospital Records - they really do have some of the freshest talent around - this is my first post featuring D&B veteran Sonic...and as long as he sticks with liquid, i am sure it wont be the last. Hospital were debating whether to include this on the forthcoming Sick Music 2 (sneak peak here)- however lucky for us - they decided to release Sonic as a single, so here it is, a soaring dance floor anthem - pure liquid euphoria!

Apathesis is the latest signing to Bristol's Urban Scrumping Records (the label whose roster includes my choice artist of the moment - Phaeleh) - Apathesis EP - Begin was released in June 09 and is available here) it is a great album, crammed full of of the laid back Dubstep, synonymous with Scrumping. However in contrast, is 'Wake Up.' With its deep bass and awesome use of sampling, (effortlessly interweaving dark beats with smatterings of dialogue and theme music from cult classic 'Donnie Darko,') this track is tailored for the dancefloor...very tasty

This morning i opened my laptop rubbed the sleep from my eyes and checked my email - and then rubbed them again, there in my inbox was a simple message 'Tron - 320, sorry for the last copy, this one is real!'

So with trembling hands, a pounding heart and blurry vision i clicked download - i was skeptical, after all, i have received roughly 20 emails all promising 'Tron' in flawless 320 - and all were fakes
- however today was no fake, i have finally been rewarded after almost a year of constant searching - the real deal has landed!

I don't often listen to music that gets me immediately posting, but every now and then a track/tracks pushes my buttons - and i feel obliged to share. This latest piece of audio ambrosia comes from the artist Nicolas Jaar, who i have only just discovered due to recently browsing through Chilean DJ's (a small list) - weird i know, but justified as i am in fact currently based in Chile.

Nicolas Jaar is a very interesting artist - he released his first EP 'The Student' via Wolf & Lamb records in 2008, aged just 17 - W+ L records was and is a perfect match, the label (which is renowned for their tranquil releases,) have nurtured Jaar's vision of slow productions of post minimal house & techno - and i mean ultra slow, 100 bpm and lower - and, if some of his interviews are anything to go by - he plans to get slower...

However, if you are expecting languid relaxed tracks...think again, despite their speed, this music will have you moving (in my case bobbing up&down on my springy chair)

Of course this track is awesome - it's a smooth affair of plucked guitar and soft vocals, nicely complemented with buckets of Latin beats, it builds and builds but is agonizingly unhurried, which makes the journey of funky percussion even more enjoyable

'Time For Us' - probably one of the best tracks i have heard in 2010 - its audio porn, pure and simple - its the vocals that make it - smooth as chocolate and unbelievably deep, it would be a real experience to hear this in a club - something i am now going to endeavor to do!

Re-Drum is both a respected Torrentech Radio DJ & a serious producer, who has several releases TT's netlabel. I had listened to a few of his sets and was impressed, but it was only when i visited his Soundcloud, that i truly realized what a versatile and talented producer he is. I promptly approached him, and managed to get him to give ONEUPMANSHIP this interview

So, Re-Drum, i'm going to start off easy, what inspired you you to choose your name?

Well, when I was a kid, I had a writing problem: I was writing in mirror and to cure that problem, the doctors gave me these rhythm exercises... Also, it's a reference to the movie "The Shining" - and i do a bit of drumming

Where are you currently based - whats the scene like there, how are the locals enjoying your sound?

I'm based in Brest, France. The scene here... well i have lived here for 3 years and I don't really know the scene here. But it seems that drum and bass is pretty huge... But you know, France is not a great place when it comes to electronic music, i mean, the "night life" is a bit restricted by our laws... I haven't had the chance to do live sets yet, but I really want to!

What was the music you listened too when you were younger, who was your biggest influence pushing you into the electronic music scene?

When I was like 8 years old, the "French Touch" was pretty big... 'Homework' - Daft Punk & 'Music Sounds Better with You' - Stardust etc... these are the sounds I grew up with. Later, (around 14,) my sister gave me DJ Shadow - Entroducing and this was the moment i discovered great drum patterns, sampling and such. It introduced me to great labels like Warp, LEX, Rephlex... I think Aphex Twin is my main influence, he is the artist that gave me the passion for electronic music - Warp is a huge influence, especially Boards of Canada, Autechre & Squarepusher...

So tell us about your noise - what are the genres you are comfortable producing?

I've produced a lot of different genres. I started to produce jungle/glitch and ambient at first. Then Downtempo, Dub Techno and Dubstep... I'd say that Dub has been my biggest influence lately.

I should introduce you to our writer Graphics - you seem to have very similar influences! So tell me, in an ideal world, where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Mmmm... in a ideal world, I would say, traveling around the world doing concerts and when I'm home producing music. I would like to make a decent living doing music.

You released your previous albums over Torrentech's Netlabel obviously your views on 'music piracy' must differ greatly from the average producer - give us the lowdown on your piracy opinion - you say you want to make a decent living from music but how will you with piracy as it is?

Ah, the piracy... I think a lot about it and it's normal and everybody should think about it. I like to give my music away for free because, it's a very good way to spread the love. I think most artists don't see the "promotion" side of it. I know a lot of people who download music to see if they like it. And if they like, they buy! I do that myself and I think that, without piracy, i would buy less music. Copyright is out of date but it's still the standard... things do need to change but it will take time!

How would you feel if your forthcoming EP 'Path Between Universes,' (Turbulent Calm Records) starts being shared around?

Really... I don't care. Actually, if it's shared around and people like it, I would be very happy, I'm here for the music. I decided to release it on a "classic" label to see what happens. And I have to say, when I see the Last.fm page, it's very odd. I see people listening to my music just few hours after the free release, but with the commercial one, I see nobody (for the moment)

Hopefully, this interview will bring you some more exposure. So Re-Drum, whats the most exciting thing that's happened to you recently?

I am collaborating with Josh Winiberg, a pianist from UK, living in Berlin now, he has also released on the Torrentech netlabel with "Game Over". He his very talented and right now we are working on some new tracks, I'm very excited about it because we share the same idea of music and the way we work is very interesting!

Veteran Norwegian producers Röyksopp have been kind enough to release this gem to the general public, 'as a none profit thing - done purely for the love of music.'

How nice is that - a full 320 track...absolutely free, wunderbar!

In return all they ask, is that you vote for their track 'The Girl and the Robot' as - Hit of the Year - or - Video of the Year - not a bad deal to be honest.

The track is entitled 'De Ushuaia a La Quiaca - Versi' and is a really wonderful take on 'De Ushuaia a La Quiaca' by Gustavo Santaolalla - a pleasing acoustic guitar sample, a shaker, some strings and a beat - very simple and very pretty, well worth the effort of a click to download!

James Blake taking Dubstep further......

I decided to make my first post on one of the few people encouraging Dubstep to travel in different directions, so much so that the term 'Dubstep' shouldn't really be linked with him. He is called James Blake and has just released the single 'The Bells Sketch' on Hessle Audio. This song is incredible, one of the eeriest Dubstep songs I have heard since D1's 'Crack Bong'. Pretty Lights

Pretty Lights is a really impressive collaboration between two artists - Colorado based Derek Vincent Smith & Cory Eberhard. Smith uses samples as the basis of his production - normally this would be uninteresting, however i have never heard an artist (aside from maybe Daedelus) who manipulates them in such a unique and exciting fashion - using a Monome and and Akai MPD32, accompanied on the drums by Eberhard, Pretty Lights is able to create some truly exceptional live music.

Their latest album 'Making Up a Changing Mind' is unbelievable - a tour de force of glitch-hop beats, buzzing synth lines, crammed full of funk and soul samples...and the best part, is that, like rest of their music, the album is completely 100% free

ONEUPMANSHIP has been lucky enough to bag an interview with up&coming DJ and Producer - Oli Rodigan a.k.a Cadenza

So Oli, first off, tell us about your music and what makes you tick

Well...the dubstep thing for me is a recent development, its not how i got into production at all, i used to chop and sample old soul records from my dad's studio

I have been reading up on you, and i see you started DJing aged 15, that's fairly remarkable, i know most of my mates didn't have the faintest clue about electronic music at that age!

Ha! nah i didn't DJ until i was 18 - i started producing when i was 15

Ah..my bad... still impressive though. The first album that got me interested in electronic music was 'DecksandDrumsandRockandRoll' - Propellerheads, was there a particular song/album/moment for you?

Hmmm...I have never been asked that so i don't really have an answer. My bro was into D&B so he used to play me tunes. 'Barcelona' - DKay & Epsilon was a memorable one

You developed your technique in the nightclubs of London, but right now you are cutting swathes through Edinburgh…how are they liking your noise, hows the scene up there?

When i came up here, i teamed up with a few promotion companies to kick start things. We hosted a night with Shy FX, Breakage & Trolley Snatcha, then TC and Jakwob - we had booked Joker but (unfortunately) he had to be cancelled, instead we have plans to do a Dub Police Takeover sometime in the coming year!

The Edinburgh scene is quiet compared to Leeds and Manchester etc..., but the Scots like our nights and they really dig some of my first bits of dubstep, this remix i did of 'We Come 1' - Faithless goes off every time.

That's a pretty impressive roll call, are you maintaining contact with any of these artists...is there any interest in reworking Cadenza tracks?

There was some talk of VIP reworks here and there, but nothing came thru in the end, but i should be doing a guest mix for Digital Soundboy on Rinse FM very soon

So tell us about your forthcoming releases...and your relationship with Headlock records

They are bringing out my debut record - i believe its gonna be an AA side

A. Goons and Roses (95% sure)

AA. Either one of my tunes, or one by another artist, but it probs wont be a 140bpm track

Headlock is run by Rob Ayton and my brother Dasha, who are also part of a 4 man reggae soundsystem by the name of Extra Stout

Are there any plans to re-release some of your old material through Headlock?

Some of the Dubstep i put into the Blogosphere i imagine has been snapped up, so no point in releasing that, but i do want to release more of the Hip Hop instrumentals i make..

Thanks to Cadenza for taking the time to give us an interview, his debut record HLD002 will finished by the end of the month, and will be available at all good London record stores (BM Soho etc...)

The Rebirth of Cool - Cadenza (256 kbps) - This track is firmly on repeat - i love these Trip Hop ryddms - reminds me of summer days spent chilling at the Big Chill

Stranded - Cadenza (320 kbps) - I really really enjoyed this track oddly uplifting, straight out of science fiction - if Doctor Who did dubstep, it would sound like this!

For all of you bored of ONEUPMAN's posts, let me introduce myself! My name is LLOYDEY, and in the coming year, you should look to my posts for the latest in Tech-House, Minimal and other generally uplifting genres.

As this is my first post, ONEUPMAN told me to write my life story, but what's the point - after all, as Sir David 'Ram Jam' Rodigan puts it - 'I'm not going to make too many speeches, as its all about the music.'

So, i am going to start off with a bang - Carl Cox re-rub of 'Slice 2010' - Joey Beltram has been an instant hit this year. The veteran of dance music is still pulling out all the stops. It was Cox who won DJ Mags' first ever 'Top DJ in the World' award in 1997 - 13 years later he still never ceases to amaze, releasing a constant stream of epic dancefloor fillers. Its clear that Cox is still at the top of his game. In his latest re-rub he has just put a simple dancey vibe into an already amazing track, and in my opinion, improved it!

Dance Disorder is an artist i have been keeping an eye on since they were signed to Ellen Alliens' ever expanding BPitch Control label. They are still relatively unknown in the UK, but i am sure that's about to change. Their latest release 'Zusammen' will be an instant classic, with it's melodic Nu Disco sound, but i don't expect anything less from such a high-calibre label.

One of my favourite songs of 2009 is 'Hypnotized' - Oliver Koletzki feat. Fran. The vocals are beautifully smooth, and with its relaxed jazzy beat, its a really pleasant way to start (or finish) a set. The video is also a must watch - its (unsurprisingly) hypnotic... this track makes up my mind, Koletzki really is a brilliant producer!

The Canadian king of dance music Deadmau5 is back, with yet another big release under his own record label Mau5trap. Zimmerman teamed up nearly 2 years ago with Chris Lake one of House music's biggest names to produce this song. It has now been re-released as a Michael Woods rework, and has been a huge success already with radio DJ extraordinaire Pete Tong choosing it has his first essential tune of 2010.

Extrawelt has just been one of those names tripping of my tongue for the last year. The duo have been becoming increasingly prestigious in the competitive scene of German techno. They have released some truly amazing stuff, their 2008 Schone Neue Extrawelt album really put them on the scene with awesome tracks such as 'Trummerfield.' However one of my absolute favorites, is their remix of 'The Leopard' - Minilogue. This is a totally awe inspiring song, more for listing through headphones then out in a club. The unofficial video is also epic, mashed up YouTube footage of 'The Leopard', a must see.

Earthquake

Earlier this week, this young blogger was fluky enough to escape the 8.8 Concepcion earthquake (one of the largest ever recorded) shaken but unharmed (in fact i slept through all of the tremor until it threw me out of bed,) - The immediate result of this massive earthquake was a 12 hour power cut and the immediate evacuation of all the lower part of Ancud (the town i am living in,) about an hour later it was hit by quite a large tidal wave.

Three days later, and we have a slight food and petrol shortage, however people have returned to their homes, power is back up, and the internet is running smoothly... the immediate chaos appears to be over, so in this period of relative calm, i thought i would take the time to share the music i was listening too on my iPod whilst the power was out...

If you were following my blog last year, then you would have been lucky enough to cop some Francesco Diaz & Young Rebels, this dynamic duo have been producing together since 2004, and their progressive house tracks are...anthems, nuff said really - their latest tune 'Damascus' was released through the Wormland Black Label, it's a great track - the build up is like a mashup between Benassi & the Bloody Beetroots, its a winning harpsichord/organ melody with a thumping undertone - makes you want to rave-it-up in a church :)

If your a fan of Paul Kalkbrenner then you will love his brother Fritz, if you have listened to Sky & Sand then you will have definitely heard him - the pleasant hum along vocals are the multi-talented brother... now he is back with a fresh EP - The Dead End (available now), the track i have chosen from it is called 'Philadelphia' its a really lovely piece of ravey Tech-House

Now its time for one of my all time favourite D&B producers - Spor - he is a truly gifted producer, and an unparalleled DJ and i have been fortunate to see him live on a number of occasions. I am not going to lie, I have been waiting on his newest EP 'Conquerors & Commoners' with serious anticipation, so when the EP dropped into my inbox 2 months early, i was very, very happy.

So i quickly had a listen, and was really surprised by this track - 'Overdue feat. Tasha Baxter' - a relaxed ensemble of tinkling plucked strings and really pleasing vocals - it is definitely not signature Spor, however the addition of a drum loop makes it extremely tasty liquid, so i will be purchasing the EP as soon as it comes out!

Dear Readers,

Let there be rejoicing in the streets - ONEUPMANSHIP is back - but with a brand new look, two fantastic new writers and one shiny new rule

From now on we will NOT be posting 320 kbps mp3's - the exception to the rule is if we have the express permission of the artist, if we do post a link, it will be YouTube quality

I am sorry for the ridiculously long down-time, i had plans for a .com collaboration with our old blogging friends APEWITHBARRELS, however the cost was too high, so for the time being .blogspot will have to do!

In the sites down-time i continued finding, expanding and refining my music collection - in doing so i unearthed a mountain of old school finery which i will be sprinkling throughout the blog over the coming year... i will continue to post whatever is in my current most played - the music that delights and inspires me - as usual i will try not to focus on any particular genre... and if i am struggling for inspiration i will be looking to the Shoutbox to provide me with ideas for posts.

As per usual Hospital records maintain their ridiculous signing standard by bringing Blokhe4d onto the scene, i have had their debut album 'Bad Taste' for a while - and it doesn't disappoint, Frictions' review sums it up in a nutshell - 'Super dark, super dirty, what did you expect?' - suffice to say they are certainly good enough for this whole post to be devoted to their sterling efforts, instead i am giving you a taster of NHS162 release 'Full Circle' - its out on promo now (and i was lucky enough to bag a copy) - get yours direct from Hospital Records on March 22nd

Next up a techno track from Spektre, this ridiculously exciting duo hail from Leeds, i have been watching their growth with interest since i stumbled upon their remix of Wake Turbulence by Koen Groeneveld - they are England's roundhouse kick to Berlin's Techno scene, and definitely ones to watch - here is a sample of their latest burnt offering 'Tesseract' from the Black Ice EP available here for digital download

While Spektre seems to heading for greatness, this artist is already out the other side, a veritable Techno god... master of all he surveys - Sascha Funke is a veteran producer and firm member of the Kompakt and BPitch Control club, i have always admired his work - and once again i was forced to pull my jaw off the floor after listening to his latest album 'Mango' - it is a masterpiece, this is one of my Desert Island Discs - and here is a taster - 3.05 in and you will be throwing money at the computer screen for the 320 (i guarantee it!)

I posted a Netsky remix of Miike Snow back near the birth of this blog - just like Calvin Harris, Miike Snow has a remarkable pull for remixes, his latest song 'Silvia' is literally drowning in them... to be honest this version can get a bit grating after the first few plays - however i am going to post it here cause it would definitely make a crowd jump - i must confess i know nothing about the artist responsible for the remix, but their juddering rework of the vocals is spot on and definitely lives up to their name

Last but not least a song that i have been searching for since Sonar 09 - Joker dropped it in his EPIC set at the Sonar Lab Stage (check it here,) there was a possibility that this song would never be released because of difficulties getting sample rights cleared - but i waited nearly a year and one month ago my prayers were finally answered by Black Box Recordings when the nicely wrapped vinyl dropped through the post - so here you go, one of the best dubstep tracks of the decade - the vocals are sublime and the drop is oh so heavy

Looking to 2010

Looking to 2010 – off the top of my head, there are a few old (and new) artists I am keeping an eye on, cause I am convinced that great things are going to happen:

Flux Pavilion – I count Digital Controller, Fucking Noise and Steppa as some of the only tracks maintaining my interest in Dubstep… As I become more disenchanted with hard style, it is Flux, Vaski & 16 Bit that are keeping me entertained – Voscillate is already stuck in my head on repeat and I cannot wait to see what else this producer has in store!

Graphics – this 17-year-old producer has been creating some truly remarkable music. He definitely has massive potential, and I cannot wait to see what genre he focuses his attention on in 2010 (prepare yourselves for some promised exclusives) - become a fan here: Graphics

Phaeleh (pronounced Fellah) – I listened to Healing (feat. Indi Kaur) early in 2009, and It inspired me to buy every other release from Urban Scrumping records, his relaxed Dubstyle has got me so excited for 2010 – I have had my eye on the track Plink for some time, and i am aching for its release!

Vaski – Terror Dome EP was (in my opinion) the best Dubstep album this year, its seriously intelligent - weirdly enough one Vaski's first nights of the New Year is called 1UP, i am definitely going to be grabbing his latest song - Zombie Apocalypse when its eventually released, and i just cannot wait for the next album

16Bit - What can i say, literally the most fantastic artist, the Twice 12" is just magic - he seems to be bringing special tracks out fairly rapidly, and if the quality remains the same, we are in for an excellent time

Burial – Earlier this year Will Bevan collaborated with Four Tet to produce one of THE songs of 2009 – Moth, this ambient electronic sound was such a breath of fresh air…. there are rumors of further collaborations, and Massive Attack have hinted that Burial has been given the task of remixing some of their tracks...I suspect 2010 is going to be a Burial year.

Bassnectar – Cozza Frenzy was my favorite album of 2009 and Churn of the Century was my first post, he has an incredible Bass sound, and I am certain I am going to be posting more of his stuff over the coming year...including this free track Where Is My Mind (Bassnectar Remix)

Joachim Pastor – Le Poulain was an absolutely seminal track, and this surprisingly unknown producer continues to create beautiful music Gailo, Lamb & Bang Bang are all in my top rated... i am expecting big things

High Contrast – I would be lying if I said he hadn’t influenced my love for liquid D&B, I still rate Tough Guys Don’t Dance as one of the best albums, and Racing Green remains one of my favorite tracks EVER, however I personally have become extremely disappointed by his recent productions (excluding Flashing Lights). But I think this is all set to change, as there are rumours of High Contrast having a potential collaboration with Dubfire… which makes him one to watch out for!

Netsky – as I said before; this artist can do no wrong, I don’t think he has made a bad song yet… Come Back Home, Everyday, King of the Stars & Hold On To Love are amongst my choice tracks of 2009, and I cannot wait to see him behind the decks now that he is signed exclusively to Hospital records, I expect biiiig things!

Mount Kimbie – my brother showed me this artist after he saw him performing at a Gilles Peterson presents night at Ronnie Scotts. I was suitably impressed with his unique glitchy, dub style - Sketch On Glass is a brilliant album and I will definitely be keeping my ears peeled!

Marek Hemmann – ascending the ladder of the Berlin underground, this DJ has me very excited – his style is a fusion of Techno and Nu:Jazz - a minimal Parov Stelar, its an incredible sound.

Robert G Roy – The Undertacker EP made me very sad cause I knew I could never make anything as good, I have already brought everything he has ever produced…and i cannot wait to see what else this Slovenian producer whips out the bag, I think I might actually be in love

Pryda – Just one of the alter egos of superstar DJ Eric Prydz. I was lucky to see Pryda at Matter earlier this year and his set remains one of the most impressive I have seen… there were whispers of a Pryda album this year, however with nothing yet, I can only assume this awesome event is going to take place in 2010 and I am very, very keyed up

Sander Kleinberg - Sander has been in the studio putting the finishing touches on his debut artist album due in early 2010. The album will feature loads of amazing new productions, which he has worked on with U.S. big-cheese Josh Gabriel, its gonna be biiig
