Swing Time

 
Probably my best clubbing experience was when i was enjoying a standard night at the Egg and whoever was behind the decks suddenly switched up the tempo and broke the set down into some Electro-swing - it was awesome,  all the seasoned pilled-up ravers paired up and started tearing up the Charleston.

I have now built up a fairly large collection of Nu:Jazz, Broken-beat & Electro Swing, and here are a few favourites (old&new) -

Remember Me was released in 1997 on the first of the now well established compilation album series 'Mushroom Jazz' - it was a bit of a one hit wonder for the Scottish DJ Blue Boy, its a funky and full of soul, a dance classic that i am sure you will have heard before (digitally available here)

A State of Mind are the British Hip Hop collective behind the poetry and Trip-Hop DJ Wax Tailor is the beat-master - 'Say Yes' is a fantastic compilation of brass samples, strings and hippityhoppity beats - i heart this!

Mr Bruce is the MC master and DJ Chuckles is the complementary beat genius - been enjoying 'The Correspondents' since i caught a brief glimpse at the Big Chill Festival - 'Washington Square' is a fantastic blend of swing-time and rapid lyrical madness....ludicrously addictive! You can get it here

Of course this post wouldn't be complete without the song that got me digging swing - i have everything Jurassic 5 have officially released - because they are awesome (and i have waaay to much free time) - 'Swing Set' is a glorious mashup of (unsurprisingly) swing-time samples (the vocal sample taken straight from Animal House is genius)... a real foot tapper - get it here

Taken from Parov Stelars' latest album 'Coco' - an awesome production, but then what do you expect from one of Europes' most promising producers! 'The Mojo Radio Gang' is typical Stelar, a catchy blend of sampled vocals and trumpet bursts undercut by a simple kick beat - really uplifting stuff, perfect for the dance floor...

Chillout Sessions


Its time for my favourite kind of post - a mixture of Downtempo, Trip-Hop, Deep House & Techno and general chilled out beats for your listening pleasure!

Taken from Starkeys' new album Stars (feat. Anneka) (available here)  is 'Stars (Ital Tek Remix)'.
Ital Tek has transformed the orginal. He starts it slowly with a modicum of bright synths utilising the originals soft vocals before slowly transitioning into a beautiful medley of deep intelligent beats and edgy soaring chords...extremely relaxing Ambient Dubstep

'Londinium' - Archive is in my humble opinion possibly the greatest trip hop album ever pressed! Released in 1996 and available here. It is a triumph, i am just sorry i didn't share it with you sooner - the track i have chosen is called 'Beautiful World' - the opening is very Vangelis-esque, it wouldn't feel wrong to hear this playing in 'Blade Runner,' ...that is until the smooth Hip-Hop vocals kick in, i love the subtle organ backing the vocals...an awesome track from probably one of my favourite albums of all time

Taken from the Colour Series - Pink 07 Sampler (released on Freerange Records) is 'Wanna Love You' - the artists Vincenzo & Elmar Schubert have taken a fantastic disco sample and deconstructed it into a few pulsing chords - the addition of a solid house beat gives it a really catchy quality - but its really smooth listening with a very pleasant breakdown...definitely worth the purchase!

Swiss artist Raphaël Ripperton recently released album 'Niwa' (Japanese for Garden,) its a fantastic compilation of Deep House and organic Chillout - and 'The Sandbox' is my choice track - its a warm atmospheric track, i really love the loop of child vocals, the gently plucked guitar and the bell chimes on the breakdown...

Its not often you get a speech on the crisis of today's society in a techno track - but Piano Africano is an exception - the full opening minute is a lecture  accompanied by a slow beat build, climaxing into a deep techno anthem...perfect for the morning floor, and its available here

Introducing...Cadenza


ONEUPMANSHIP has been lucky enough to bag an interview with up&coming DJ and Producer - Oli Rodigan a.k.a Cadenza

So Oli, first off, tell us about your music and what makes you tick

Well...the dubstep thing for me is a recent development, its not how i got into production at all, i used to chop and sample old soul records from my dad's studio

I have been reading up on you, and i see you started DJing aged 15, that's fairly remarkable, i know most of my mates didn't have the faintest clue about electronic music at that age!

Ha! nah i didn't DJ until i was 18 - i started producing when i was 15

Ah..my bad... still impressive though. The first album that got me interested in electronic music was 'DecksandDrumsandRockandRoll' - Propellerheads, was there a particular song/album/moment for you?

Hmmm...I have never been asked that so i don't really have an answer. My bro was into D&B so he used to play me tunes. 'Barcelona' - DKay & Epsilon was a memorable one

You developed your technique in the nightclubs of London, but right now you are cutting swathes through Edinburgh…how are they liking your noise,  hows the scene up there?

When i came up here, i teamed up with a few promotion companies to kick start things. We hosted a night with Shy FX, Breakage & Trolley Snatcha, then TC and Jakwob - we had booked Joker but (unfortunately) he had to be cancelled, instead we have plans to do a Dub Police Takeover sometime in the coming year!

The Edinburgh scene is quiet compared to Leeds and Manchester etc..., but the Scots like our nights and they really dig some of my first bits of dubstep, this remix i did of 'We Come 1' - Faithless goes off every time.  

That's a pretty impressive roll call, are you maintaining contact with any of these artists...is there any interest in reworking Cadenza tracks?

There was some talk of VIP reworks here and there, but nothing came thru in the end, but i should be doing a guest mix for Digital Soundboy on Rinse FM very soon

So tell us about your forthcoming releases...and your relationship with Headlock records

They are bringing out my debut record - i believe its gonna be an AA side

A. Goons and Roses (95% sure)
AA. Either one of my tunes, or one by another artist, but it probs wont be a 140bpm track

Headlock is run by Rob Ayton and my brother Dasha, who are also part of a 4 man reggae soundsystem by the name of Extra Stout 

Are there any plans to re-release some of your old material through Headlock?

Some of the Dubstep i put into the Blogosphere i imagine has been snapped up, so no point in releasing that, but i do want to release more of the Hip Hop instrumentals i make..

Thanks to Cadenza for taking the time to give us an interview, his debut record HLD002 will finished by the end of the month, and will be available at all good London record stores (BM Soho etc...) 

Before i sign off i would like to draw attention to some of the musical finery he sent over -  

Ain't Nobody (Cadenza Remix) - Chaka Khan (320 kbps) - its a winning formula - pleasant female vocals with a murky undertone...good job

We Come 1 (Cadenza Remix) - Faithless (320 kbps) - Hard to do justice to such a classic, but Cadenza tears it up with a surprising build up and a phat bassline - nice and grimey, you can see why Edinburgh bounces to it

The Rebirth of Cool - Cadenza (256 kbps) - This track is firmly on repeat - i love these Trip Hop ryddms - reminds me of summer days spent chilling at the Big Chill

Stranded - Cadenza (320 kbps) - I really really enjoyed this track oddly uplifting, straight out of science fiction - if Doctor Who did dubstep, it would sound like this!
